Closeted gay Catholic Bishops. Who knew?

A potentially explosive report has linked the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom – the report said – were being blackmailed by outsiders.

La Repubblica said the cardinals' report identified a series of meeting places in and around Rome. They included a villa outside the Italian capital, a sauna in a Rome suburb, a beauty parlour in the centre, and a former university residence that was in use by a provincial Italian archbishop.

Blackmail, too, of course.

Let 'em come out of the closet, for pity's sake. Gays are fully human, just like the rest of us poor schlubs.* So why shouldn't they be bishops?

Of course, Benedict should have resigned -- heck, should have performed public penance every day for the rest of his miserable, weasel-ish, Nazi-lovin' life -- for massive and continuing child abuse, for generations, and for the equally massive cover-up. But no. If it turns out Benedict's resigning because teh gay ZOMG!!!!!, that is so telling of complete moral and intellectual bankruptcy by yet another huge -- and, may I add, patriarchal -- institution.

NOTE * And while you're at, do what the Episcopalians have already done, and ordain women, who are also fully human.
