Career progressives to Obama: Would lashing you with a wet noodle be too harsh?
Glenn Greenwald has a fine takedown of what in on a bad day I'd call the lickspittle toadyism of the career "progressive" faction of the political class. We know most of the arguments from and about the "hold his feet to the fire, but not yet, oh Lord, not yet" crowd, so I'll just extract this:
"'Liberals in the media are going to be tougher on Obama and more respectful at the same time,' Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker's chief political commentator and a former speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, told POLITICO. 'He was the champion of our side, he vanquished the foe….. [but] now liberals don't have to worry about hurting his chances for re-election, so they can be tougher in urging him to do what he should be doing.'"
Shorter Greenwald: Yeah, and weasels might fly out of my butt.
I picked out that quote because Hendryk Herzberg is the guy who traded the New Yorker's soul for a chance to suck up to Obama. I will never forgive Herzberg for turning a formerly great publication, that I read my whole adult life, and that my parents read, into a steaming pile of poorly fact-checked and obsequious dung. Tina Brown, I can forgive, but not Herzberg.
NOTE Adding that naturally if you are considering subscribing to the New Yorker this season, you should send donate to Corrente instead! We don't have the covers, but we do have Plantidotes!
