Bush on White House bailout meeting fiasco: "Can't we just all go out and say things are OK?" [09/27/2008]

AP:

New details emerged over the weekend of a remarkably tumultuous White House meeting on the bailout Thursday. With the session breaking up in disarray, according to two participants, Bush issued an appeal, saying, "Can't we just all go out and say things are OK?"

And there you have it.

Truly, we are ruled by insane children.

This is not exactly news as

This is not exactly news as far as Bush is concerned. I find it strange that pundits haven't made more of the fact that a large portion of Bush's party have, as we like to say on Corrente, thrown Bush under the bus.

It's almost as if Boehner asked McCain if he can drive a shift, kicked Bush out and said, "You drive; I'll tell you where to go."

It's all good from the GOP perspective

Repub Congressfolk get to look like fiscally prudent mavericks, while the Dems make like especially obsequious drooling Airedales trying to fetch a bill that no-doubt approximates Paulson's original proposal but allows them to feel they've accomplished something.

yup--they win both ways as usual--

and we get shit on as part of a "bipartisan compromise" that'll eventually emerge that'll suck.

Heh heh

Good one, Hobson.

The real people thrown under the bus are the Ron Paul supporters. I still wish we could connect with them on the empire, because there Paul is not only right on the policy (never mind how he gets there) but the only one saying it.

Ends justify the means, Lambert?

Ya know, before this primary started I leaned more toward a utilitarian, ends justify the means justification for political problems but now I'm seeing that without a strong enough principles making up the means, we run the risk of ruining the whole damn enterprise.

Yeah, I'm moody these days.

Only tyrants rig elections.

Not sure where you get that gq

If it were possible to make a deal with the Ron Paul people, and I don't know if it is....

Boehner is treading carefully...

It’s almost as if Boehner asked McCain if he can drive a shift, kicked Bush out and said, “You drive; I’ll tell you where to go.”

according to an article by NYT's Carl Hulse reprinted in the local paper this morning (although the section below was missing from the Times' piece). Boehner, who first supported the plan, later backed off because of the growing dissension by conservatives and because it looked like dems could finalize the deal before McCain got to Washington (according to this analysis).

Members of both parties also saw leadership politics at work. Boehner’s hold on his job is not entirely secure should his party suffer serious losses in November. And as Republican numbers in the House shrink, the remaining bloc gets more conservative as those in the safest seats survive. Boehner is not a hard-right conservative, and he could not afford to get too far out ahead of his rank-and-file.

Good reading! Favorite quote: What could go wrong?
Beyond war, inflation, the end of the technology/productivity wave, and financial collapse, we think the most potent and short-term threat would be societies demanding a more ‘equitable’ share of wealth.
