Birth Pangs for the Middle East

MJS's picture

Digby dodges Pacific lightning strikes and ponders Condi Rice's use of a curious phrase:

"What we're seeing here ... are the birth pangs of a new Middle East and whatever we do, we have to be certain that we are pushing forward to the new Middle East, not going back to the old one."

Naturally, I wrote a song...

Birth Pangs for the Middle East
(sung to the tune "Thanks For the Memories")

Birth pangs for the Middle East
For Israel, Iraq
When Lebanon's attacked
When Condi Rice tries to be nice
But she comes off like a hack
Birth pangs are all the buzz

Birth pangs for the Middle East
Her water at last broke
The fetus slips its yoke
It comes on down until it crowns
Unless its cord does choke
Birth pangs are all the buzz

Now since post partum I heart 'em
Alone in the smoky hereafter
I wait for the music of crapture
And then I see afterbirth on me

Birth pangs for the Middle East
A blast that's not banal
Babe's in the birth canal
Fresh gloves I bought to catch the tot
Still I dropped it all somehow
I almost had him

Birth pangs for the Middle East
Of how when born we cried
With bombers' suicides
The babes first steps filled with regret
We should have let him hide
How ghastly it was

Birth pangs for the Middle East
A placenta that was trashed
A hemorraghic mass
The babe has yet to breathe
The parents seethe, their hopes dashed
How cranky they are

So long to those nights at the cafe
Together we'd drink espresso
And pretend we worked for Esso
And wish that you
Were a dinosaur

I know that democracy
Can cause grown men to cry
And make the babies die
Bury them in small coffins
No chance to wave 'bye-bye
And tanks are all that's left

Birth pangs for the Middle East
For Israel, Iraq
When Lebanon's attacked
When Condi Rice tries to be nice
But she comes off like a hack
Birth pangs are all the buzz
