Beltway Dems to give retroactive "Get Out Of Jail Free" card to Bush, telcos, on warrantless wiretapping felonies?

Apparently, calling and writing to Democrats isn't enough to get them to do the right thing. Voting for Democrats isn't enough to get them to do the right thing. Voting Democrats back into power isn't enough to get them to do the right thing. Giving them money isn't enough to get them to do the right thing.

I guess, at this point, the only question is whether they'll give Bush and the telcos a free pass at midnight, before going on vacation, before they leave for vacation, or whether they'll do it out in the road, in broad daylight, for all to see. Let's remember, please, that what the most vicious and powerful Republican majority in history couldn't do for itself, the Democrats are about to do for them. Glenn:

It is hard to overstate how much of a priority FISA immunity is for the Bush White House, and for obvious reasons. Ironically, they were actually proposing the same sweeping retroactive immunity language back in September of 2006 when the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress, but they could not get the Congress to pass FISA legislation. With the Democrats in control of Congress, and Democratic Beltway influence-peddlers like Gorelick working with them, their chances of obtaining such legislation are now plainly enhanced, and according to both Risen and Isikoff/Hosenball, they are likely to obtain some form of retroactive immunity now that Democrats control Congress. There are reasons -- good reasons -- why the current Congress is more popular among Republicans than Democrats.

Bingo. So much for the rule of law.

Harry, Nancy: Nice work. Hey, how's that FISA rewrite coming?

JUST read that before stopping here

My stomach is still quite queasy, (Thanks, Glenn!) and I've poured a shot of bourbon. For breakfast.

I felt helpless enough when the pubs had a strong majority, but this is absofuckinglutely ridiculous.

Hand me that bucket, wouldja, Lambert, hon.

This hasn’t happened yet.

This hasn't happened yet. But your headline makes it seem like it has. Maybe you should be working on getting a 100,000 emails, calls and faxes to Harry and Nancy's offices to ask if there is any truth in this.

You almost sound satisfied that this verifies your point of view about Dems. We can't afford to sink into that kind of cynicism. Believe me, I understand it. But maybe we need to find ways to be more effective in influencing them.

No, there's a question mark

It's a fine line between cynicism, realism, and despair. And it's especially galling because I know they want me to feel that way, but I do anyhow.

We. Are. Going. To. Die. We must restore hope in the world. We must bring forth a new way of living that can sustain the world. Or else it is not just us who will die but everyone. What have we got to lose? Go forth and Fight!—Xan

only one way to "influence" them

and that's playing a game we'll always lose (tv/media unreality). what we can do? primary their asses.

it annoys me, because that is the obvious 'next step.' many have adopted it, but not enough. despair, cynicism, laziness...there are many reasons for inaction. what is really needed is a 'mainstream' leader willing to unite the disaffected. gore could do it, but i've heard he won't challenge hillary, because he's a gentleman. i guess we'll have to wait for the next round of populists, or something.

I’m curious, CD and

I'm curious, CD and others, how you feel about Edwards. Losing elections seems to have a positive effect on Democrats.

He has been saying a lot of good things. You guys even have a video of his over there. /

Corse he can't get any press coverage or it is all about what a pansy he is. Just curious.

Right now, I'm feeling that Edwards is the best that we have

He's not getting enough coverage because they hate him. Which is a big plus in my book, 'cause they hated Al Gore too.

envitable

Some things are glaringly obvious.
Congress will pass the largest Iraq funding budget ever.
Congress will pass even more supplementals next summer.
Congress will only have meaningless non-binding token references to troop levels and benchmarks.
Congress will approve an even worse Atty General.
People will slowly forget about all the 'subpoenas' and investigations about any number of crimes (the emails, the USA firings, the hiring loyal bushies, the plundering of treasury by war profiteers, the felonious telecoms and illegal domestic spying, violations of Geneva vis a vis torture.
Posse Commitatus, Habeas Corpus, and the Bill of Rights are a thing of the past.
The media and complicit war approving Dems will appoint their nominee despite what the people want (see: wikipedia-Howard Dean and HRC current polling data)

These morans in Congress are too pussy to vote to explicitly state that Iran is not part of a war authorization and reiterate that Congress has the power to conduct war. But they aren't too feeble to pass Sense of the Meaninglessbody resolutions condemning factually correct MoveOn political ads. (where was the resolution to condemn swift boat ads or Tobin NH phone crimes?)

Kerry conceded and Congress won't look into stolen elections because they plan to steal them as well. Why expose the framework and machinery behind election theft when you know it is up to the highest bidder of influence and backroom deals.

"This hasn’t happened yet." No, it's been happening NONSTOP since these asshats took control of the Congress. Nonstop capitulation, caving, ineptitude, spineless "we'll give Bush more time" as he thumbs his nose and his staff and cronies repeatedly mock and put their thumbs up the asses of hearing attendees.

"I do not recall"... Should be met with a motion to export Gonzo to Gitmo to 'experience' his memory creating machine he perfected. He said it was legal, so we wouldn't be violating any of his rights. We could just hand him a DOJ ruling.
