Artesanía: word of the day, theme of my new year

votermom's picture

Artesanía is the Spanish word for handicrafts (I looked it up!). I love how pretty the word is, just as I love making things with my hands. I know a lot of Correntians love working with their hands too, so I wish you all a New Year of Happy Handcrafting!

So who wants to talk about their crafting plans, goals, wishes for the year with me?
I'll go first. I want to improve my knitting and crocheting methodically, and I want to get to a point where I can make some hobby money with it. So I am going to study off a couple of books (of which I need to get my own copies).
I also started a "memory crochet diary" -- check it out at http://memorycrochet.blogspot.com/
and tell me what you think of it.

Also, does gardening count as a craft? Anyway, I need to get seeds. Not one thing wintersown yet! 8-o

So, your turn, people. What will your crafty year be like?

And so is your blog -- duck yellow, my new favorite color name!

I'm working on knitting my way through my stash, without buying anything new -- just a "use what you have" mentality. Very fun and challenging, plus I'm making up my own patterns as I go along, which is really, really fun!!

Okay, now here's a challenge for you. I bought this shawl at a thrift store and am wondering what kind of "artesania" it is, because I've never seen anything like it before. (If you click on the image, you'll get a larger one with better details.)

I'm guessing the beige/tan part is crochet (which I don't know how to do), but what are those insets? Is there a name for this? Or a country known for this kind of work?

I think you are right, the body looks like crochet to me too. I am not sure what the insets are, but I think they might be handwoven -- they remind me of basketry, on a much smaller scale. Just a guess.
Are you on ravelry btw? I want to see what you make with your stash!

Ok, I just joined, now to figure out how it works :-) -- back soon! That should be a good place to post the mystery shawl.

I haven't done it in decades and I was not particularly talented in the first place. But I need hats and I haven't been able to find what I want in the stores. Fortunately, there are lots of lovely yarn shops around, so I should have my choice of tasty tidbits to chose between. My oh my, have the options changed in the past 30 years.

knitting is great. I find it really calming. I think my brain goes into alpha waves or something when I knit or crochet.

... I'll have a venue for this sort of thing, I promise.

In the mean time, it's great to see this kind of post, and it's a heck of a lot more healthy and productive for people to spend their leisure time -- if any; being poor takes up all of your time, as the Red Queen says -- doing this than watching the teebee!

Needle-weaving, perhaps? The green corner bits are definitely woven. My Gram could have told us, she studied fancy needlework in teacher's college.......nearly a century ago!
If you were here, you could bring the shawl to our community textile get together at the next spin-in, we're bringing in old things and mystery 'folded something's and there will be lots of books and experts on hand to identify stuff.

My wrists no longer allow me to knit or crochet, but I'm a soaper and gardener....... gardening is definitely an art and a craft!

I've never heard of that, but the green parts of inserts are woven like fabric, so that could be it.

Your textile group sounds like fun. Vintage textiles and laces are some of my favorite collectibles, especially anything with cutwork or embroidery -- does anyone still do that kind of thing?

I draw, and paint- people are my favorite objects.
This year, I want to do it more- seriously? purposefully? permanently?
Any other artists, in whatever medium?

You should definitely share pics if you can.
We would love to see them.

We could have show & tell posts regularly. :)
