So why does Obama cut the middleman out for student loans, but not for health care?
Friday's Washington Post explained it beautifully, pointing out that by directly giving the student loans to students and cutting out the greedy middlemen ... Obama saves the taxpayers $47.5 billion over the next ten years and, at the same time, helps far more students-- two factors that aren't exactly McKeon goals. Since the government assumes all the default risk, there is no reason at all to involve the finance companies.
So, why not cut out the "greedy middlemen" in the health insurance industry too?

Rahm's brother, Ezekiel, butchers the moral issues on health care
Hilariously, Mini-Rahm's against single payer because of [wait for it] American exceptionalism:
The biggest problem with single-payer is its failure to cohere with core American values.
Uh huh. Like the insurance companies' business model of denying care for profit is a core American value?
And hilariously, Mini-Rahm thinks that the issue is health insurance:
In a morally responsible country, everyone should have health insurance*.
But that's not true. Mini-Rahm's sentence should read:
In a morally responsible country, everyone should have health
insurancecare.
Mini-Rahm prates about core American values, but if these quotes are any indication, he has no concept of "moral responsibility" at all. He just gets the basic issues wrong; in other words, he's a classic Villager. See (via Allegre) this one story:
Last week, in the public clinic where I work, I treated a 6-year-old girl who had visited the emergency room for cellulitis, an infection of the skin, over her hand. Usually a relatively minor condition that is easily treated with a 10-day course of antibiotics, cellulitis can sometimes cause severe consequences, including life-threatening sepsis, if not treated promptly.
The reason this patient was notable was because she was uninsured and had been sent home with a prescription that her mother tried to fill but
was unable to afford. How much did the antibiotic suspension cost? $500.
The moral problem is the child's cellulitis, not which business or government entity processes the payment, if any. It's denial of care that is the harm done, here. Mini-Rahm, like a classic bad salesperson, is trying to sell a drill, when the buyer wants a hole. Please, please, can Conyers call him as a witness? Read more…
Obama nominates Sebelius as Health secretary
Sat Feb 28, 2009 5:42pm EST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will nominate Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to head the Department of Health and Human Services, a U.S. official said on Saturday.Sebelius has accepted Obama's offer and the president will formally announce the nomination on Monday afternoon at the White House, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Well.... Reactions?
Update: Firedoglake has same info, adds that Rahm's brother, Dr. Ezekial, may be up for Health Czar (WH position on healthcare).
Obama's health insurance mandate is a just another bailout, this time for the insurance companies
Jonathan Cohn quoting Dr. Steve Auerbach
Mandate
plans such as Obama/Baucus are in effect a bail-out of the private insurance companies that add no value to the health care system. Reducing the federal tax benefit such as Wyden and Republicans support, just shifts the cost from the Federal government to state government, employers and individual.

Behold another Mandos movie review to brighten your day.
Last night I saw "Echelon Conspiracy". Verdict: OMG! Worst. Script. Writing. Since. Attack. Of. The. Clones. My eyes! My eyes! I tried hard but I cannot find a way in which it does not suck.
Fortunately, it is the kind of bad that makes it an ideal candidate for geek movie nights. As you can tell from the title, it's a techie surveillance-paranoia movie, and in fact it is a knockoff of "Eagle Eye". "Eagle Eye" was no "Slumdog Millionaire", not least because it stars that annoying Sunni LePoulet guy, but it had a plot twist that was worth the price of admission. "Echelon" tries, but it is completely deus ex machina and weak.
Sheriff pummels 15 year-old girl
The sheriff's lawyer did not want the following video released because "it doesn't tell the whole story." Read the whole article and it'll paint a clear picture of this monster.
NOTE: If the video is unavailable just click the Seattle P-I link and it should work.
Pushing Back on the Executive Branch
No Associated Press content was harmed in the writing of this post
On most issues I am firmly in the liberal camp, but have recently voiced disagreements with some on the left I usually agree with. The responses have been somewhat surprising. There are issues concerning the presidency and the executive branch in general, and Barack Obama should not be above criticism if he contributes to them. Defenders have said he is just getting started so it is too early to make even preliminary evaluations, that relatively minor retreats from Bush administration policies are sufficient concessions to civil libertarians, that the economic mess crowds out consideration of other issues, or that we ought to give him the benefit of the doubt as he works out his stance towards the Constitution in the expectation he will eventually end up in the right place.
