You Thought We Ran Recipes Just For Fun?

Hell, we thought we ran recipes just for fun. Fun is good. If you can't have fun during your revolution why the fuck bother?

Little did we know....from today's (Jan. 1 2008 that is) Guardian: relaying a question posed to a number of prominent scientists asking "What have you changed your mind about recently?":

What was the turning point in human evolution?

Richard Wrangham, British anthropologist who studied under Jane Goodall. Now at Harvard University, his research includes primate behaviour and human evolution.

"I used to think that human origins were explained by meat-eating. After all, the idea that meat-eating launched humanity has been the textbook evolutionary story for decades, mooted even before Darwin was born.

"But in a rethinking of conventional wisdom I now think that cooking was the major advance that turned ape into human ... Cooked food is the signature feature of human diet. It not only makes our food safe and easy to eat, but it also grants us large amounts of energy compared to a raw diet,

Happy New Year

Heck, here's another one:  Read more…

Play hard, play clean -- play to win

January 3 is four days away. The biggest Democratic primary of the year is so close you can smell the desperation. Who should be standing up in the klieg lights at the end of the night, victorious? Who shouldn't, and why?

I'm curious

Which of the Democratic candidates are willing to call themselves "liberals" and their policies "liberal"?

Also, how many of them call themselves "progressives" and their policies "progressive"? It takes somewhat less daring to use that word, since Rove and his ilk haven't quite managed to tar it with their bullshit spin. But still...

Here I'm breaking the lawyer's rule of knowing what the answer is when I ask a question.

Tell me again what the problem with trial lawyers is?

Republican talking points are for bad people. Obama needs to understand this.

Anybody else but me wondering if Condi deked Bhutto back to Pakistan, knowing she'd get killed?

Just asking. Since apparently we were handling her intel.

I mean, just because our boy Musharaff is going to do just fine out of this, at least when the shooting dies down, that would be no reason to think that Bush double-crossed his strongest political enemy, right?

A Taste of Mittocrisy

DEAR MISTER ROMNEY, I really appreciate your steadfast commitment to your faith. I've heard people choose these types of ideologies because it grounds a person in morality and integrity and human values. And of course I can admire that. With all the hate- and fear-mongering filling the public square today, I welcome men of your caliber.

I only have a small question. Given that a central tenet of Mormonism is that the Indians of the Americas are descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel, how do you reconcile your current anti-immigrant stance with the fact that Mexicans are descended, too, from these same people? How do your actions fit into the theological framework now that you are the one trying to stop them from wandering?

Relieved to Leave the Atrocities of 2007 Behind

Leaving 2007 with a sigh of relief, I am ready to see a few things forever in the past, never to return again. With my usual optimism, I think this has happened.

Any remaining vestiges of credibility for this administration have disappeared. No longer are we treated to those holdouts from the 2000 campaign, waiting for a return to compassion, to rational economic policy, to respect for the constitution, to law-abiding behavior and the Rule of Law. This may be the end of respectability for the entire GOP, and it has the gloss of rationality that in the past was allowed to rhetoric in support of the right. The lies have totally engulfed the entire right wing.

Some of my favorite quotes of 2007

A few days back, Glenn put up his list of notable quotes from 2007, which got me searching my own archives.

Some of the best and worst ones follow.

[The key distinction] "between you and the guy you are torturing is that he might be innocent, but you are not." -- Sideshow blog commenter thebewilderness

"I'm not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I'm sure I've taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I'm sure I'm opposed to government spending on it, I'm sure I support the president's policies on it." -- John McCain, on whether condoms prevent the spread of HIV

Meta New Year's list

So, should we make one of those stupid lists for New Year's?

Readers, let's type a list of the types of lists we should list!
