Allowing people to persuade themselves

affinis's picture

One of the most common mechanisms thwarting persuasion (e.g. in political discussions) is reactance.
One useful method for avoiding reactance in an audience is to set up a message as a question (allowing readers to persuade themselves).

e.g. "What are the consequences of smoking for your lungs?" works better than "Smoking causes fatal lung cancer."
