Administration takes first steps to privatizing Social Security by closing offices and crapifying service

The cat is now out of the bag:

For months there have been rumors that the Social Security Administration has a “secret plan” to close all of its field offices. Is it true? A little-known report commissioned by the SSA the request of Congress seems to hold the answer. The summary document outlining the plan, which is labeled “for internal use only,” is unavailable from the SSA but can be found here.

Does the document, entitled “Long Term Strategic Vision [ugh] and Vision Elements,” really propose shuttering all field offices? The answer, buried beneath a barrage of obfuscatory consultantese, clearly seems to be “yes.” Worse, the report also suggests that many of the SSA’s critical functions could soon be outsourced to private-sector partners and contractors.

Somebody should ask Hillary what she thinks about this. Snort.

Here's the PDF. Download it while you still can. Here's a handy translation of page 1:

Only Nixon can go to China. Only Obama can destroy the Post Office, Social Security, Medicare, and the VA.

0 team has a lot to do before he retires to the good life. Trade deals as Mellon points out and this putting in the step stones to killing Main Street safety nets once for all.

I have a SS office one town over, the people in their are overworked and I'm sure under paid but have help resolve small problems for me a few times that the phone call and online service couldn't. Sad and any saving will be pocketed by the vendors ceo.

A related issue: I have lately noticed (during my commute, on freeway and on local streets) a number of large semi-trucks bearing the legend "US Postal Contractor."

Is this (as I suspect) something new in the world? I know the USPS has been (in the phrase of a German friend) singled out by God for special punishment; certainly this would fit that scenario.

Any information, insight, or other commentary, would welcome.

The leitmotif of the Age of Obama is "The destruction of our great public institutions."

I include, of course, the SSA and USPS-- but also, by extension, and in a larger and more fundamental sense, the US Constitution itself.

"The destruction of our great public institutions."

People, including Democrats, still think of the Democrats as the good guys. If it was ever true, it's not true now.

Looking through the NAPA contracts in the FDPS, they do a lot of work with the Centers for Disease Control, DoJ/FBI, FEMA, NOAA, the Department of Energy, but they even work for Veterans Affairs and the Executive Office of the President's Office of National Drug Control. These are all agency contracts during the Obama administration, but they worked for Bush/Cheney quite a bit, too, and others going back a long ways....
